The Deep Furrow Scarf: A Beginner-Friendly Pattern with Timeless Texture

Sometimes the simplest patterns are the most elegant. This timeless design uses just 3 skeins of DK yarn to create a striking texture that’s both easy to remember and delightfully simple. Perfect for knitters of all levels, but especially rewarding for beginner knitters, it’s a quick and satisfying project that lets the yarn have all the attention.

Why You’ll Love This Pattern

This scarf is all about texture and clean lines. Using just a simple combination of knits and purls, you’ll create a beautifully ridged fabric that looks more complex than it really is. And the best part? You only need to remember one row—yep, it's the same repeat from start to finish! Plus, it makes a fabulous gift—timeless, cosy, and totally unisex.

Whether it’s your first scarf or your fiftieth, the Deep Furrow Scarf is a pattern that satisfies. Simple, wearable, and stunning in West Wool Tandem.

How to Wear It: One Scarf, Many Looks

One of the joys of the Deep Furrow Scarf is how effortlessly it slips into your everyday wardrobe. With nearly two meters of squishy, textured fabric, it’s long enough to wrap, twist, and knot in countless ways—making it as fun to style as it is to knit.

Double it around your neck on colder days to create a cocoon of warmth that still lays beautifully under a coat. Prefer a more styled look? Knot it low and loose with the tails draped forward for an effortlessly chic finish.

Its generous length and lightweight structure also make it ideal for transitional seasons—layer it over a spring trench or under a fall blazer. And because it’s knit in West Wool Tandem, the stitch definition adds a beautiful textural contrast to both structured outerwear and cosy knits alike.

Pro tip: Knit it in a bold colour like Red Hot and let it be the statement piece—or go with a neutral like North Sea for an everyday classic you’ll wear on repeat.

The Yarn: West Wool Tandem

This pattern was created with West Wool Tandem, our signature DK-weight yarn spun from 100% South American Merino wool. Tandem is soft yet structured, bouncy but breathable, and it holds texture with exceptional clarity—ideal for a stitch pattern like seeded rib.

The original samples were made in three colourways:

Pickle Juice – a playful acid green that adds a zing to grey winter days

North Sea – a deep, moody blue that channels coastal walks and misty mornings

Red Hot – a bold crimson that makes the simplest outfit pop

Each scarf requires just 3 skeins of Tandem (approximately 750 yards / 686 meters), making it a great gift knit—or a treat for yourself.
